Common questions about German salaries

What is Steuerklasse (tax class)?
Tax class is assigned by your Finanzamt based on marital status. Class I: single. Class II: single parent. Class III: married, higher earner. Class IV: married, similar incomes. Class V: married, lower earner. Class VI: second job.
How much tax do I pay in Germany?
Income up to €12,096 is tax-free (Grundfreibetrag 2025). Above that, rates rise progressively from 14% to 42% (and 45% above €277,825). Social security contributions add another ~20% on top.
What are Sozialabgaben?
Mandatory social security contributions: pension (RV 9.3%), health (KV 7.3% + Zusatzbeitrag), long-term care (PV 1.7%), and unemployment (AV 1.3%). Each capped at the Beitragsbemessungsgrenze. Employers match most contributions.
Do I pay Kirchensteuer (church tax)?
Only if you are a registered member of a Catholic or Protestant church. The rate is 8% of your income tax in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, and 9% in all other states. You can leave the church (Kirchenaustritt) to stop paying.
What is the difference between GKV and PKV?
GKV (public) charges income-linked contributions (~9% total). PKV (private) charges a fixed monthly premium based on age and health. Employees above ~€73,800/year gross can choose PKV. Most people on GKV get equivalent or better coverage.
Do I still pay Solidaritätszuschlag (Soli)?
Only if your annual income tax exceeds ~€19,950 (2025). About 90% of taxpayers were exempted from Soli since 2021. A phase-in zone prevents a sudden jump at the threshold.
