From the students
Real feedback from international students studying and working in Germany.
“The Bürgeramt vocabulary alone saved me. I finally knew what forms to ask for and could actually understand the responses.”
Aditya K.
Master's student, TU Berlin
“I tried Duolingo for months and still couldn't form a sentence. Two weeks into GoGermany and grammar finally clicked.”
Emma S.
Exchange student from Australia
“Passed my Goethe A1 on the first try. The mock exams at the end of the course are almost identical to the real thing.”

Common questions
Do I need an account to start?
No. Chapter 1 is completely open — just click "Start Chapter 1" and go. You only need an account if you want to save your progress across sessions.
How long do the courses take?
Each chapter takes 45–65 minutes. A1 (24 chapters) is roughly 18–24 hours of study. A2 (21 chapters) adds another 15–20 hours. Most students complete A1 in 4–8 weeks, then move to A2.
Is it really free?
Chapter 1 of A1 is fully free with no account required. The full A1 and A2 courses (45 chapters) require a free account to track your progress. B1 pricing is still being decided.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. GoGermany is a web app that works in any browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox. No app download needed. Audio pronunciation works on iOS Safari and Chrome desktop.
I already know some German — should I start at Chapter 1?
Browse the chapter list and jump in wherever feels right. Each chapter is self-contained enough that you can skip sections you already know.
Which exam does this prepare me for?
A1 ends with mock exams for the Goethe-Institut A1 and telc A1. A2 ends with Goethe A2 and telc A2 mock exams. These are the most common exams required for German visas and residency permits.
